The Pied Pipers

The Pied Pipers under the direction of vocalist Nancy Knorr are available for your next special event!

The assembling of the Pied Pipers, Frank Sinatra and the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra was the most formidable of the Big Band Era. The Pied Pipers officially joined Tommy Dorsey in January, 1940, just before Sinatra, who was the new boy singer with the band.  Both Sinatra and the Pied Pipers made their recording debut with the Dorsey Orchestra on February 1, 1940.

Much of the success of the Pied Pipers was due to their distinctive modern harmony and phrasing which prompted Paul Weston to state that "The Pied Pipers were truly ahead of their time."

In April 1940 the Dorsey Orchestra, combined with the historic pairing of Frank Sinatra and the Pied Pipers, struck gold with their song "I'll Never Smile Again". It was a hit for 15 weeks and remained on the charts for an additional 25 weeks.  This memorable song was the very first hit for Frank and the Pipers.

Many more hits followed such as "This Love of Mine", "There Are Such Things", "Oh, Look At Me Know", "Stardust", "The One I Love Belongs To Somebody Else", "Let's Get Away From It All", and "Put Your Dreams Away For Another Day" which later became Sinatra's theme song.

Tommy Dorsey's radio show, "Fame and Fortune" on NBC featured all of these great hits of the day and listening audiences would say, "A song could never sound bad after the Pied Pipers, Frank Sinatra and Tommy Dorsey gave it all they had!"

Sy Oliver was probably one of the most distinguished orchestrators of the Dorsey Band and Big Band Jazz.  He wrote many hits for the Pied Pipers, two of which became signature songs; "What Can I Say After I Say I'm Sorry" and "On the Sunny Side of the Street".

Jo Stafford, the female lead singer of the Pied Pipers, became a dominant voice not only with the vocal group, but also as a featured soloist, particularly on hit ballads like "Embraceable You" and "The Night We Called It a Day".

It's been stated many times that the union of the Pied Pipers, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and Frank Sinatra was the all time greatest collaboration in American popular music.  The longevity of their music is a testament to this!

The Pied Pipers made four movies during this magical time, including Sinatra's first, "Las Vegas Nights".  The other movies followed within the next few years entitled "Ship Ahoy", "DuBarry Was a Lady" and "Reveille With Beverly", featuring the hit song "Night and Day".

The Pied Pipers left Dorsey to join Johnny Mercer who was the greatest lyricist of the day and founder of a new record company in Hollywood, Capitol Records.  The Pied Pipers were the first artists to sign with Capitol and collectively made music history by recording their first Gold Record, "Dream".  The Pied Pipers soon became the biggest selling vocal group of the time and Downbeat Magazine's annual poll named the Pied Pipers as the Top Vocal Group for six consecutive years.

In 1945 and 1946, the quartet took part in a series of National Theater tours with Frank Sinatra.  They then became a second-billed attraction on Sinatra's CBS radio show and later were regulars on Sinatra's TV series, "Your Hit Parade".  Many radio and television appearances followed over the years.  A notable one was Johnny Mercer's radio show "Chesterfield Music Shop", which used the Pied Pipers biggest hit "Dream" as the closing theme.

The Pied Pipers still carry on the tradition of vocal expertise with television appearances and national theater tours.  Most recently they recorded a new album at Capitol Records - after all these years!

The Pied Pipers have come full circle from the Dorsey/Sinatra Era to today under the skilled management of lead singer Nancy Knorr. The Pied Pipers were a little girl's "Dream" ...and all good things do come true."
