With a repertoire ranging from Cole Porter to Wipeout, Simon and Son shatter classical music's pretensions with a dash of humor spicing up the Schubert. It's like watching a young Victor Borge perform with his son!
Pianist Peter Simon and his 13-year old son Saling bring their blend of comedy and music to the stage. "I was trained to be a traditional concert pianist, but I felt somewhat stifled by the tradition of that style of music that the pianist doesn't say a word, just plays and reads and everything's very serious," Simon said in recent interview.
So he started seasoning his performances with stories about broken piano legs and drunken violinists on the road, forging an act from both the classics and comedy. It worked. Reviewers raved about his keyboard acrobatics and compared him to Victor Borge.
"What gives me the greatest sense of pleasure now is that now when I look out into the audience, everyone's smiling," he said. Classical music was meant to be enjoyed, not to be appreciated by an elite group of scholars, he added. "All the great composers of the past wrote music for public consumption," he added. "And that's my goal."
Simon decided to add his son to the mix as a natural fit to his children's programs. "Two years ago, I played Carnegie Hall," he said. "I decided to put my son on the program. I dressed him in tails and brought him out. He played two solos and then we did a duet and he stole the show."
Today, father and son go out on tour once a month so the younger Simon can keep up with his studies at home. "He plays much, much better than I ever did at that age," Simon explained. "I attribute that not only to his intelligence and his wonderful, wonderful talent, but to his teacher, who also happens to be me," he said, laughing.
When Saling gets out of school, he likes to jump on the beds in the hotel rooms and he loves room service." Simon said. "He also likes to perform. He's a ham like his Dad. But if as a teenager he says, 'I don't want to do this anymore,' that's OK.
The two jump back and forth between instruments, switching hands and having fun with the likes of Liszt and Greig. Their concert itinerary takes them around the world from Indiana to India, from Arizona to Australia and New Zealand.
The father-son duo of Peter and Saling Simon are gobbling up rave reviews along tour routes through the U.S. Appearing at local city theaters and high schools, the pair combine Classical music with educational anecdotes and a unique comic flare (not unlike that of Victor Borge). With dueling bumble bees, Pink Panther boogies, and renditions of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, the pair has charmed audiences and critics alike. The duo played most recently at the State Department Building in Washington, DC.
