Ron Palillo

Ron Palillo will forever be known as the goofy and loveable sweathog Arnold Dingfelder Horshack.

Factoids:

  • welcome back kotterPalillo uses his given name Ronald G. Paolillo when he works as an artist. He uses it in memory of his father.
  • The name Paolillo is Italian and has its origin in the town of Bari, Puglia.
  • Palillo graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1972 with a degree in dramatic arts.
  • Palillo's character, Arnold Horshack, used a Thermos brand P.O.T.A. lunchbox during the first season of Welcome Back Kotter.
  • Palillo himself came up with Horshack's over-enthusiastic "ooh-ooh."
  • According to an episode of "Welcome Back, Kotter", Horshack means, "the cattle are dying."
  • Palillo combined the accents of his late Aunt from New Haven, Connecticut and the Dustin Hoffman character in "Midnight Cowboy" to develop the unique accent of Arnold Horshack.
  • Palillo started his own theater company at the age of 14.
  • Palillo has his roots in Community Theater.
  • In 1976 Mattel produced a line of "Welcome Back Kotter" dolls.
  • Did any of you own the "Welcome Back, Kotter Board Game by Ideal? It was also released in 1976.

He has taken his talent to the world of children's literature, where he has done illustrations for two books. A Gift for the Contessa and The Red Wings of Christmas.

He was teaching acting at the University of Connecticut as of 1999. This University offers The Nafe E. Katter-Ron Palillo Scholarship in Acting and is awarded to an undergraduate or to a graduate student majoring in acting. The award is made on the basis of demonstrated talent, contributions to departmental productions, and professional promise..
