Patti Page

The legendary Patti Page is available for your next special event!

It was a "Golden Celebration" marking a luminous career that has spanned six decades. An American icon walked onto the Carnegie Hall stage with the first of eight standing ovations that punctuated her debut performance at this hallowed venue. Fans from several generations paid homage to "That Singing Rage, Miss Patti Page."

In fitting tribute, Mercury Records concurrently released a retrospective CD box set of 80 songs culled from her more than 100 albums and 160 singles (84 of which made Billboard's Top 40). Patti's three gold albums and fifteen gold singles include such big hits as "Old Cape Cod", "Allegheny Moon" and "Doggie In The Window." Her biggest hit, "Tennessee Waltz," sold over ten million copies and is the largest selling single by a female artist. As one writer put it, "It is abundantly clear that 'The Singing Rage' is a true godmother of contemporary pop." (With more than 100 million record sales to date) "It seems impossible that Patti Page could be anything other than the biggest-selling female singer of all time."

Born Clara Ann Fowler in Claremore, Oklahoma, one of her earliest recollections is walking barefoot to school and saving her one pair of shoes for Sunday dress-up. With a unique talent and sheer perseverance she has become a sophisticated and sensitive performer with a solid career spanning nightclubs, concert halls, the musical comedy stage, motion pictures, radio and television.

With a scholarship in the art department at Tulsa University in the offing, Clara Ann thought the promise of a job in the art department of KTUL in Tulsa seemed more practical than four years of study. At the time, KTUL had a fifteen minute sustaining program sponsored by the local Page Milk Company called "Meet Patti Page." When the regular girl who performed as the fictitious "Patti Page" left the program, Clara Ann put her natural singing talents to work and got the job... and with it a new name. Soon she was starring on several shows on KTUL.

In 1946, Patti sought greener pastures in Chicago working many dubs and small theaters. Several appearances on ABC Radio's popular network show, "Breakfast Club," hosted by Don McNeil led to Patti securing a program of her own on the CBS Radio Network.

patti page concertMercury Records, at that time a small independent recording company, had just been launched in Chicago and they needed a female vocalist to join a roster that already included Vic Damone and Frankie Laine. Almost two years into her contract Mercury gave her a simple little song originally intended for Vic Damone. The song's arrangement required an echo effect by back-up singers, but the budget had been cut to allow only for a trio and no back-up. Patti's innovative manager suggested that she sing all the parts and answer her own voice. Working with acetate discs, tape and wire recording was not yet available, the studio engineer recorded over a disc that had already been cut. Disc jockeys around the country were intrigued by the label, which read, "Vocals by Patti Page and Patti Page." "Confess" went to Number 12 on the Billboard charts and stayed for 10 weeks.

Patti followed this innovation with the release of "With My Eyes Wide Open I'm Dreaming," which became her first bona fide smash and earned her the first of fifteen gold records. This time she did complete four-part harmony and the label read "Vocal by Patti Page, Patti Page, Patti Page and Patti Page." The concept of multiple-voice recording placed Patti five full years ahead of an industry that has still never gone beyond that basic sound.

Working off the success of their new star, Mercury decided to have Patti cut a song for release during her holiday booking at New York's famed Copacabana. "Boogie Woogie Santa Claus" came and went but the flip side became a timeless classic. "Tennessee Waltz" reached Number 1 on the Billboard charts on November 10, 1950 and stayed there for thirty weeks. This song without an arrangement allowed Patti to become the first pop singer to cross over the bridge to country music. It established Mercury Records as a major label and is the largest selling single in Country Music history.

During her stellar career Patti has proved her ability to ride the changing times, recording every conceivable type of music, while at the same time, remaining faithful to her own basic style. Among the highlights are "Mockin' Bird Hill," "Would I Love You," "All My Love," "Detour," "I Went To Your Wedding," "Mr. and Mississippi," "Changing Partners," "Cross Over The Bridge," "Steam Heat," "Let Me Go Lover," "You Belong To Me," "Go On With The Wedding," "Left Right Out Of Your Heart," "Go On Home" and the legendary "Doggie In The Window."

In 1963, Patti switched to a long-term Columbia Records contract and the hits kept coming. Despite the British invasion of the "U.S., Patti made the Top 10 in 1965 with the release of "Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte" from the Academy Award Nominated film starring Bette Davis. The song from the film, which Patti performed on the awards broadcast, was also nominated.

Since the 60"s Patti has made Nashville her recording base and leaned more and more on her "country" roots in Oklahoma. Other country hits have included "You Can't Be True Dear," "The Same Old You," "Gentle On My Mind," "Little Green Apples," My Man Friday," "Hello, We're Lonely" (with Tom T. Hall) and she teamed with George Jones on the Epic recording "You Never Looked That Good When You Were Mine" featured on the Top 10 Album Wine Colored Roses.

Patti's talents have brought success in other mediums as well. As the only musical performer in history to have her own weekly series on all three networks. NBC aired "The Scott Music Hall" twice weekly. CBS presented Patti in a fifteen minute show, followed by a lavish one-hour weekly show called The Big Record, and ABC followed with The Patti Page Show.

patti page agentOn the silver screen Patti co-starred in the Sinclair Lewis classic Elmer Gantry along with Burt Lancaster in his Oscar winning role. Other movies included Dondi with David Janssen and Boy's Night Out with James Garner and Kim Novak. On the musical stage she hit her mark in Annie Get Your Gun. As one critic noted "Patti brings an easy grace to the musical stage...another bulls-eye for the talented Miss Page."

In 1980 Patti was honored with the prestigious Pioneer Award from the Academy of Country Music for her major contributions as the first artist to perfect the multiple-voice technique as well as the first major cross-over artist to popularize country music to the general public. She was one of the original inductees on the "Hollywood Walk of Fame". In 1983 she was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame". Recently she was inducted into the newly formed "Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame", and has received her star on the "Country Walk of Fame" in Nashville.

As Patti hits a golden career milestone you might say this legend has done it all. But she is ready to do it all over again, beginning with the "The Patti Page Show" on "The Music Of Your Life" Radio Network. Patti's career has indeed come full circle with the national debut of this two hour weekly show in October.

Patti is married to retired aerospace executive Jerry Filiciotto. When not on tour throughout the world in theaters and concert halls, the couple split their time between their home in Del Mar, California and their farm in New Hampshire.

With a distinctive voice and memorable style, Patti Page has earned the respect of fellow artists and the love of millions of fans all over the world.
