Malibu Storm

We recently enjoyed booking Malibu Storm at a recent special event and can assist in providing them for yours too!

Musical families have an uncanny ability to harmonize. Whether it's The Everly Brothers, Nashville's The Judds or Ireland's The Corrs, some of music's best singing acts found the perfect vocal blend right at home. Malibu Storm is blessed with achingly close harmonies that come naturally to certain siblings. The California-based country trio discovered the knack while identical twin sisters Dana, Lauren and brother Michael were still young children. “Lauren and I started singing at five,” recalls Dana, “and we just seemed to know right away what to do with our voices. Soon, Michael was joining in.”

That instinctive commingling of voices is just one of the highlights on Malibu Storm's self-titled debut album for Rounder Records. The album also showcases the prodigious talents of the trio as instrumentalists: Dana and Lauren are award-winning musicians who have won national competitions on the banjo and fiddle respectively. Michael provides assured accompaniment to his sisters on bass and has also won numerous vocal competitions. While their roots run deep in traditional bluegrass, the siblings' taste runs to folk, country, pop and even heavy metal. The album's material features, as the first single, a stunning remake of Def Leppard's 1983 hit “Photograph.”

Produced by Mark Bright (Rascal Flatts, Jo Dee Messina) and recorded at Nashville 's Emerald Studio, Malibu Storm boasts a contemporary country sound reminiscent of The Dixie Chicks. The buzzing “Long Way to Fall” features an infectious chorus about taking chances in affairs of the heart, while “I'd Be with You,” with its funky edge is a stirring ode to desire. The driving “Hammer and Nails” takes a no-nonsense stand in favor of strong foundations in relationships. Meanwhile, several songs, including the sunny “Old Hickory Lake,” a crisp country version of the Allen Toussaint's classic “Working in a Coal Mine,” Janis Ian's ballad “Some People's Lives,” and Lauren's rollicking fiddle tune “Clover,” are uptempo party tunes that could kickstart the most laidback summer gathering.

But their musical tastes and talents set them apart. "From the first time we heard the banjo and fiddle together, we were hooked on country and bluegrass music.” Dana says.  “We have loved playing it ever since."

Dana's love for the music began the day she found her father's old banjo in the garage, lying dormant since his college days. “Right away, I fell in love with the sound and started learning to play,” she says. “Lauren saw how much fun I was having with the banjo and wanted to join in.”  But, like many identical twins, Lauren wanted to be slightly different. “I wanted to learn an instrument, so we could play together,” says Lauren, “but not the same as Dana. She chose with the fiddle.”

Before reaching the age of 14, Dana and Lauren began winning banjo and fiddle competitions and performing. Before long, Michael joined them on bass and they attended school during the week and played the most prestigious music festivals on weekends. An early supporter and fan was bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley, who was impressed by their mellifluous vocals, and spirited picking and bowing style. Starting when they were 15, Stanley invited Lauren and Dana to perform as his special guest on many performances. In 1996, the band released their debut album, Duality, on their own City West Records label. A mix of Cajun, country and traditional bluegrass, it featured their hit song “Waterbound,” which stayed on the bluegrass charts for 15malibu storm booking contact months.

With the siblings' shift to a more contemporary country sound, the need arose for a new group name. Says Michael: “We wanted something that reflected more of who we are and where we're from. Malibu is the closest beach to where we live—and where we always hang out.” Plus, adds Dana, “ Malibu is such a pretty word and storm has a nice, powerful connotation.” Combining ultra-sweet harmonies and strong musicianship, Malibu Storm is a potent new force on country music's horizon.
