Dennis DeYoung - The Music of StyxDennis DeYoung and The Music of Styx are available for your next special event in the following formats:
For over 4 decades, Dennis DeYoung has been a singer, songwriter, keyboardist and founding member of the rock group Styx. The Chicago-based band originated in 1964 when 16-year-old DeYoung and brothers John and Chuck Panozzo joined forces in the garage of DeYoungs childhood home. Styx sold over 35 million albums and scored ten Top Ten singles worldwide. It was the only band to ever record four consecutive triple platinum albums. As a singer and songwriter, DeYoung has sung and written such rock classics as:
His singing talents have made his voice one of the most recognizable in the world. In addition to his work with Styx, DeYoung has recorded four solo albums including Desert Moon, whose title track achieved Top Ten status. DeYoungs Broadway debut was starring as Pontius Pilate in the 25th anniversary production of Andrew Lloyd Webbers Jesus Christ Superstar. His performance earned a Joseph Jefferson Award nomination for best supporting actor in a musical. While performing in Superstar, DeYoung was approached by Atlantic Records to sing and produce 10 on Broadway, a compilation of his favorite Broadway songs. His passion for American musical theater and composers like George Gershwin and Lerner and Loew inspired him to write The Hunchback of Notre Dame, a musical based on Victor Hugos novel. Nashvilles Tennessee Repertory Theatre mounted a full musical production of Hunchback in the fall of 1997 to glowing reviews.
In 2000, DeYoung and Academy Award winning film composer, Alan Silvestri, rearranged and re-orchestrated the song Grand Illusion with an 85-piece symphony orchestra and rock band for the IMAX film Siegfried and Roy: The Magic Box. This orchestral concept influenced DeYoung to create a live concert retrospective of his career. Combining Styxs greatest hits, selections from The Hunchback of Notre Dame and many Broadway favorites, he began touring select cities with a 50-piece symphony orchestra and rock band. In 2002, WTTW PBS Chicago taped DeYoung performing with his rock band, a full symphony orchestra and The Chicago Childrens Choir for PBS Soundstage. DeYoungs Soundstage pledge program is currently airing nationwide on PBS stations. In April 2003, DeYoung performed and recorded an expanded version of the symphony show at the historic Chicago Theatre. This 2 hour CD set is a retrospective of DeYoungs career and includes Hello God, one of 3 new studio tracks on the album.
DeYoung is a native of Chicago. In January 2004, DeYoung celebrated 34 years of marriage to his high school sweetheart Suzanne. He and Suzanne have raised two children and continue to live in the Chicago area.
